Freedom to Read Week 2023

Jan. 23, 2023

February 19 – February 25, 2023

Freedom to Read Week provides an opportunity for Canadians to focus on issues of intellectual freedom as they affect their community, their province, their country and countries around the world. The event encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed to them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Freedom to choose what to read, hear or watch is critical so that people can make informed decisions about issues that have an impact on their daily lives. Important decisions are supported by barrier-free access to reliable information in books, journals and other online or print material. The freedom to read can never be taken for granted – libraries in Canada are responding every day to challenges to materials in their collections.

You can help to spread the word by celebrating freedom to read at your library and encouraging your municipality to join us in proclaiming Freedom to Read Week. Find more information, artwork, resources and celebration ideas at www.freedomtoread.ca.
